Linscombe Farm, based just outside Crediton at Newbuildings, has been certified by the Soil Association for 12 years for producing organic vegetables for the award winning organic box service run by Phil and Helen Thomas. The family farm is celebrating organic fortnight this year with the attainment of full Soil Association organic status on their additional block of land at Upton Pyne, just off the A377 from Crediton to Exeter. The extra land, which has been undergoing conversion to organic for the last two years, will assist Phil and Helen’s efforts to supply their own grown produce year round, to the local community via the box service and local Farmers’ Markets. The land at Linscombe is 550 feet above sea level which whilst having some advantages, does shorten the season for some of the crops – the climate at Upton Pyne is surprisingly different, considering the proximity of the two sites, and the couple hope to extend the season for some of the summer season crops, although this year they would be happy with any summer at all! The aim of growing all the produce themselves, is to provide the vegetables as fresh as possible, so that the families who buy them get the full health benefit from their vegetables, whilst genuinely reducing food-miles!
The Linscombe box service now also offers its box customers the opportunity of having organic fruit delivered alongside their vegetables. Anyone can try Linscombe’s organic box service by ordering a “trial box” sample which is packed into a complimentary Linscombe jute bag-for-life.
